Are you a drugstore beauty junkie? More of a high end, deluxe girl? A hybrid of both?
I tend to abide by the notion that “more is more” when it comes to beauty products and their price. It’s something I’m working on, but I trust things more when they have a higher price tag. Lame? Probably. This makes my beauty routine at times expensive and annoying— I blame it on working in the beauty industry for almost 10 (!!!) years, around high end, professional-grade product. But I do know that drugstore items have stepped it up, when it comes to quality and ingredient selection. And they should be given a fair shot. So I pull them into the mix, at times, to see what's new and noteworthy.
I have a few drugstore beauty products up my sleeve that I swear by, that I love, that I’ve trusted for years, and that I'll perpetually stock up on at my local CVS.
My drugstore ride or die list:
Clairol Shimmer Lights:
I’ve used this purple shampoo since I started bleaching my hair blonde, and I noticed how unsightly brassy strands were. Enter: Shimmer Lights by Clairol. This stuff tones brassiness and calms the yellow, better than the best of them. I’ve tried the expensive stuff, I’ve tried other drugstore stuff. Shimmer Lights wins.
Mane ’N Tail Shampoo:
I’m almost ashamed to admit this one… but I’m not, because of how much I love Main ’N Tail shampoo. You know, the stuff that was originally made for HORSES. But it works! Softer, cleaner hair, less breakage. And who doesn’t want hair as long and as strong as a black stallion?
L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray:
This hairspray is a legend. But really. It’s an industry staple, loved by both professionals and it’s been used on red carpet events for generations. This stuff GETS WORK DONE. Holds things in place, without stickiness, stiffness, plus it comes out in an ultra fine spray.
TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer:
This thermal protectant was the winner of one our BFB Hair labs, and it won for a good reason. It leaves hair silky, weightless and highly protected from all that thermal damage your curling and straightening irons cause. Over continued use your hair will be stronger and healthier.
Kristin Ess Soft Shine Beach Wave Spray:
When Kristin Ess, celebrity hairstylist, brought her full line to Target, the world rejoiced! Her branding is modern and beautiful, the smells and textures scream “LUXURY,” and her hair care technology is top-tier— her stuff actually works! And at a small fraction of the high-end price. I’ve loved experimenting and testing out most of her line, and I have found an ultimate favorite, the “Soft Shine Beach Wave Spray.” I love it because I love texture in my hair, without the heaviness or the crunchiness of most texture-inducing products. This stuff wins.
Dove Refresh + Care Volume Dry Shampoo:
This is the dry shampoo I turn to when I’m in a pinch (i.e. bad greasy hair day) and I need a quick fix. I love that this stuff is at every grocery store/drugstore/superstore, which means if I’m out running errands and don’t have time to go home to tame my hair, I can run into Target, spend $4 and instantly have a great hair day. The Dove dry shampoo gives me instant volume, without weight. So my hair actually feels cleaner after using it, not tacky and heavy. I love the clean smell, that doesn’t give me a headache (as opposed to most drugstore dry shampoos). I’ll buy this stuff for life.
Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin:
If you’ve never used a cork screw hair pin, repent and fix that right now. You’ll wonder where they have been your whole life— to which I’d reply, “At the drugstore, duh.” Whoever invented these spin pins were a literal angel because they perform hair miracles. These babies hold up lots of hair, they also hold up thinner hair, they give you the perfect topknot, updo or messy bun. Try them, use them, love them. Just trust me.
That’s my list! What’s yours? Curious to know which drugstore items you trust and can get behind. Comment and let us know!
