A new summer season, means a new hair season, right? I think so.
We tend to want brighter, lighter locks, when the sun makes his shining appearance. And we also spend WAY more time outside, in the heat, in pools and ocean. Which means arming your luscious locks with the protection it needs from UV rays, chlorine, salt water, bleach and hair lighteners.
The good thing is that some of my favorite haircare companies are on the cutting edge of new, innovative summer products! They’re all available at Sephora. And I’m obsessed with each of them. Ready for some shopping? Here are my “Top 7” new summer haircare product launches. They’re good, guys. Real good.
The shopping List:
1. The Summery Hair Texture:
This wave-enhancing spray is great if you want hair that mimics that of a day spent at the beach. You know, cool, tousled and perfectly undone. Think Southern California “It Girl.”
I love that this formula won’t dry out your hair (a lot of wave sprays will, FYI). It’s a clean product, formulated with aloe and chia seed extract. Which means it’s doing good for your hair, not harm. This is important during the harsh summer months.
2. The Dry Shampoo: Blonde Edition
Dry shampoo is tricky, because companies want to make a one-size-fits-all product. But because we’re all unique, and our hair is unique. So one size won’t fit all. Dry shampoo that strives to work for the masses often puts out a product that won’t put a white cast on brunettes, while still working on blonde tones. Which often yields a substance that’s a weird clear, tacky formula. It’s heavy, weighs down blonde hair and leaves it feeling (and looking) dirtier than it actually is.
Enter: Dry Shampoo for Light Hair. Which just understands the way blonde hair wants to be treated. It’s lightweight, and restores life back into lived-in roots. It keeps light hair looking LIGHT. Because if you’re blonde, you know that greasy hair can make your tones a littler darker. Ya feel?
3. The Brassy Fix:
Ah, the brassy hair. It’s yellow. It’s coppery. It’s unsightly. It’s blonde hair’s nemesis.
And the fix is purple pigment. Since purple (i.e. violet) is opposite of yellow on the color wheel, it has a toning or muting affect, when violet is placed over yellow. (Refer back your third grade art class for more lessons on complimentary colors). If you’ve had a bout of the brassy hair sickness, you’ve also probably used a purple shampoo, which brightened your tones right up!
But Amika upped the ante by creating a purple toned mousse. It’s a finishing product that’s applied AFTER shampooing and conditioning as a sort of insurance policy against brassy hair. Genius.
4. The New “Sun IN”
Truth be told, I’m pumped for anything and everything the Ouai team puts out. They’re innovative, creative and I think they just GET it.
So I really loved when Ouai paid homage to the ‘80s and came out with a new Sun-In hair lightener. If you’re a baby and don’t remember the 1980’s (I don’t either), Sun-In was the grooviest hair product on the market. A spray designed to lighten your hair, with the help of the summer sunlight.
Ouai took that idea, and did it better. It harnesses the lightening power of lemon juice, in combination with the healing powers of coconut water and pineapple juice. It’s a sun-activated lightener, that blondes you up, without bleach. Boom.
5. The Quick Dry
The summer months are easy and breezy. I tend to wear less makeup. I tend to wear less clothing (because hellllloooooo swimming pools). And I also tend to spend less time styling my hair— as in, the most minimal effort possible. I air dry my hair 95% of the time. Which is great until you have somewhere to be and your hair is still annoyingly damp.
When I saw IGK came out with a product which speeds up your air drying time by 46% percent AND protects against frizz, I took notice! Air dried hair, but FASTER? Ding, ding, ding.
Calling all lazy hairstyling girls everywhere! Try this out.
6. The Icy Blonde Drops
Remember what I just said about brassy hair? You know, how it’s the worst?
If you have particularly “icy” blonde hair (bright blonde, platinum, violet and silver), which will tolerate ZERO brassiness, these violet drops are for you. They can be applied to any styling product to create your own yellow-busting cocktail.
Because this summer we’re kicking brassiness to the curb.
7. The Sun(hair)screen
Wearing sunscreen in the summer (but also ALWAYS) is essential in my books. Don’t opt for wrinkles and skin cancer, ladies, just don’t. But wearing HAIR sunscreen is just plain good sense. The sun hits your hair, too! And it hurts your locks. Sun damage on hair will alter its color, as well as its health. Protect your mane from brittle, dry, broken-ended hair, by applying a hair sunscreen daily.
I love this formula because it’s oil-based, which means it’s going to prevent moisture loss. But it also has a UVA/UVB sun filter, so it acts as a barrier from the scorching sun. Also, the ylang-ylang wax prevents chlorine and salt water damage… so this one product is basically the Swiss Army knife of summer hair protection.
Happy summer, ladies! And happy shopping.
